Oily Hair Home Remedy That Normalizes the Scalp
I do not have oily hair these days. In the past, I had both oily hair and complexion to match. On the other hand, my guy has hair that gets greasy even more quickly than mine ever did. If this sounds like your hair, then let me share this wonderful oily hair home remedy that helps normalize the scalp to noticeably cut the production of sebum.
This DIY oily hair treatment isn’t a rinse that you use after you shampoo. Instead, this is a simple solution that you dab onto the scalp with a loaded cotton ball afterwards. The goal is to rub the homemade solution to the scalp and allow it to dry.
Let me explain about my guy’s reluctance to try home remedies. He hates being a guinea pig even though I had used this recipe on my own hair in the past. Nonetheless, he was even more frustrated with his oily hair since warm temperatures seem to make the problem worse. Therefore, I just insisted that he give this DIY oily hair treatment a try before ruling it out since it was very helpful to me in the past.
My guy has been using this oily hair home remedy ever since. At first, he used this treatment twice in one week. Now he is down to using it just once a week. He was amazed at how effective it was for normalizing his scalp as it did.
This oily hair remedy uses just three ingredients. The first is witch hazel, which is a natural astringent derived from Hamamelis virginiana, a North American plant also known as winterbloom that has tannins for combating bacteria. It also has properties that can help with swelling and wounds to broken skin.
Witch hazel has two types with the cheaper drugstore variety with alcohol and the alcohol-free formulas, which can be confusing to choose from. Surprisingly enough, both formulas usually contain some form of alcohol.
The difference is the distilled witch hazel extract formula most often has organic on the label to indicate a purer form of the witch hazel plant. These have 100% natural pulp and leaf extracts as well as 14% organic alcohol in most instances. You also can buy organic witch hazel oil that can have anywhere from 12% to 15% alcohol.
Thayers Witch Hazel Aloe Vera Formula Alcohol Free Toner Original, also an organic formula does not contain alcohol. Yet, Thayers organic Original Witch Hazel Astringent has 10% SD Alcohol 40-B Natural Grain in its composition.
When you apply directly to your skin, the non-alcohol formulas are less drying than the varieties with regular alcohol. In this DIY oily hair remedy, you can use the formula that works best for you.
Mouthwash is another ingredient that is in this hair remedy for its antiseptic as well as antifungal properties to help deal with any dandruff issues.
Finally, I add some distilled water to keep irritation and the mix better preserved.
